I woke up Saturday (February 16th) at about 4:30 am with contractions. They were about 8-20 minutes apart all day until about 5:30 and then they started getting stronger and closer together. We just hung out at home all day together, Brian didn’t have school and my mom was here with us. Sophie was so sweet, every time I had a contraction she would come hug me and rub my back or bring me one of her stuffed animals. By 8:30 pm they were 5-8 minutes apart and I was ready to go to the hospital. Because our car was in the shop our wonderful neighbors, Ryan and Ruth Seedall, offered to let us borrow their van and stay with the kids so my mom could come to he hospital as well When Ruth came over she was carrying a book with her and Brian asked her what book it was and I said, “Brian! We are leaving!” Obviously I was ready to be at the hospital! Once we got there I waited a while before being checked by one of the nurses who had me transferred to the labor and delivery room because I was dilated to a 5 and 80% effaced. She asked if I wanted to have an epidural and I said I was still thinking about it. I’ll never forget the look on Brian’s face when I said that! He was shocked because he didn’t know I was thinking about not having an epidural. And honestly, I didn’t know I was really considering it until that moment either. Once I was transferred to the labor and delivery room the contractions were quite painful so I asked the nurse to let me know when my last chance was to have an epidural. She smiled and said how about I let her know when I really needed something for the pain. Once I was in the labor and delivery room my contractions started getting stronger, harder, and closer together. They checked me again and I was dilated to a 7. It had only been about ½ an hour since they had checked me and I was at a 5. The nurse asked me one more time if I wanted an epidural and she could see I was thinking about it – honestly the thought of having a baby exit my body with no pain medication at all sounded so painful I was a little scared. The nurse was wonderful! She told me that I was doing a great job at handling the contractions and things were progressing so quickly that she thought I’d probably have a baby within a few hours. That gave me what I needed to make it through each contraction – knowing It wouldn’t be all night long. I was fully dilated to a 10 at about 10:30 pm and was ready to start pushing. I was nervous because the contractions were so painful and hard to get through I thought pushing would be even worse. And although pushing was the most painful thing I’ve ever felt it felt good because I was actually doing something! Miles was posterior or I think he would have been pushed out pretty quickly. He was born about 11:07 pm. I couldn’t believe I had just had a baby with NO drugs! Everyone in the room thought it was going to be a girl except for me (Brian had guessed boy all along but when the doctor and everyone else said they were guessing girl he changed his mind!) I can’t even describe what I felt when Miles was born. Only those who have experienced it can even begin to know what it is like. He was so perfect and all wet and wrinkly. His little ears were flat at the top and we all laughed at them (they curled by the next day). Childbirth is simply amazing and empowering. It is so incredible what the human body can do. I am very grateful to be a mother and that the Lord has blessed me with 3 precious spirits.
